It all boils to money in the end. Hackers have numerous ways they can make money from your website once they have control of it. Be it using your website to host illegal/Objectionable, use it as a spam email server, use it boost the SEO of pharmacy sites, spreading their nasty malware to your visitors etc. there is one common reason.. Money!
Unfortunately the days of small businesses relying on “security through obscurity” to protect them are gone forever. Hackers have great financial incentive to unleash sophisticated — and often highly automated — attacks on even the smallest sites.
How Do Websites Get Hacked ?
Websites are usually hacked for the following reasons: They have not kept their website updated with the latest software updates, their passwords are not strong enough, on a shared server with other hacked sites, server’s file permissions let hackers inject content or just the software you are using has a vulnerability (even when updated to the latest versions)
Every day, criminals compromise thousands of websites. Hacks are often invisible to users, yet remain harmful to anyone viewing the page — including the site owner. For example, unbeknownst to the site owner, the hacker may have infected their site with harmful code which in turn can record keystrokes on visitors’ computers, stealing login credentials for online banking or financial transactions.
